Granite Countertops for Low-Maintenance Beauty

When you want a refined look that's easy to maintain in your kitchen or bathroom, turn to Advance Marble & Granite for a granite countertop installation.

Granite is one of the easiest to care for stones you can use in your home. It's naturally resistant to everyday household acids, highly resistant to scratching and heat, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It comes in three different finishes: honed, polished, and leathered.

Our team has over a decade of experience cutting and installing granite countertops throughout the Buzzards Bay, MA area. Learn more about the steps involved in granite maintenance below, and call Advance Marble & Granite today for a free estimate on all granite countertop installations.

Day-to-Day Steps for Maintaining Your Granite Countertop

You can clean your granite counters daily with a neutral cleaner, which should not leave a residue. It’s essential to read labels—most major brands of cleaners make a safe version for stone surfaces.

When cleaning bigger messes, you can use neutral soap and water if you use a neutral granite cleaner to rinse any soap residue from the stone. Otherwise, soap can leave a greasy film that dulls and leaves streaks on the stone surface.

Simple preventative measures can go a long way in protecting granite countertops. Make sure to use cutting boards, trivets, and cooling racks. If you have bottles of cleaning fluids, marinades, or oils, keep them in a dish and dry underneath the dish regularly.

Wipe around faucets and fixtures to prevent any mineral deposits, as these would require the stone to be restored by a professional. Cleaning these areas weekly with a neutral granite cleaner should prevent buildup.

Yearly Granite Maintenance Steps

Our experts recommend sealing most granites, but the timeline can vary depending on use and the type of sealer. Impregnating sealers provide good water, oil, and grease resistance and work just below the stone surface to safeguard against stains.

Check the manufacturer's recommendations for how you should apply your granite sealer. It is typically as easy as spraying the product on and then wiping off the excess. To know when it is time to reseal, put hot water on an area, let it sit for ten minutes, and then wipe it off. If the stone darkens, it's still absorbing moisture. If it doesn't, it's sealed.

Not every stone is the same; some are more porous than others. Some granites, such as Absolute Black, may not require sealing or require only one sealer application. Other granites, like Juparana Columbo, may require more frequent applications for sealing to be effective.

You can extend the life of the sealer if you use the right products to clean daily. Improper cleaners and oxidation from sunlight and the air are the main threats to your sealer. If properly cared for, granite counters will last a long time.
